Live Session Information:
Join Ali for a relaxed and inspiring session exploring how printed blocks can connect and interact to form repeating designs. She’ll share creative ways to look at composition, flow, and alignment while printing — sparking new ideas for how individual prints can grow into something larger. Perfect for anyone who loves discovering the rhythm and beauty within pattern making.
Ali Baecker is the artist behind 3 Dotted Penguins. She is a printmaker, teacher and surface designer living in Zurich, Switzerland. And she is your host at the first-ever Block Printing Fest.
She uses the medium of block printing to explore pattern and surface designs. All of her designs come to life through the meditative and slow process of carving blocks by hand and building up prints and patterns by placing inked block after block. her work is inspired by my daydreams about the (far away) sea and her everyday adventures (near and far) and influenced by her engineering background and her love for geometrical shapes.
Some of the most frequently asked questions at 3 Dotted Penguins are about the tools I use for my block printing work. I still remember how hard it was to figure out which tools to use when I started, and that’s why I made this commented list of my favorite block printing tools. You will also find a few tips along the way.
This guide also includes a one-page quick starter tool guide for those of you starting out and a (far from complete) list of art supply shops around the world.
Discover the magic of block printed repeat patterns in this 3-hour workshop (basic carving skills required).
You’ll learn how repeat patterns work, how to design and carve a seamless tile, and how to hand-print your own pattern on paper.
By the end, you’ll understand how repeats come together and have the confidence to create your own beautiful block printed designs.
